What is the PA Literacy Coalition?
Established in January 2025, the Pennsylvania Literacy Coalition (PLC) is a diverse network of individuals and organizations from across Pennsylvania committed to transforming literacy outcomes statewide. Representing a range of sectors, PLC members all share a common mission: to end Pennsylvania’s literacy crisis by championing comprehensive, evidence-based policies. Our coalition envisions a future where every student receives a high-quality literacy education, and every educator is equipped with the training, resources, and support essential for success.
Our Vision
We envision a Pennsylvania where every child becomes a confident, proficient reader and writer, equipped with the literacy skills essential for lifelong success. In this future, all educators will be empowered with the knowledge, training, and resources necessary to provide effective, evidence-based literacy instruction, ensuring that every student—regardless of their background—can thrive. Through this commitment, we seek to create a future where literacy opens doors for all students and strengthens communities across our state.
Our Mission
We’re on a mission to unite educators, caregivers, community members, and advocates throughout Pennsylvania to advance policies and secure funding for evidence-based literacy instruction. We are committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of background, has access to high-quality literacy education, delivered by well-prepared, knowledgeable educators. By advocating for strong public policy and investment in training, curricula, and classroom support, we aim to equip every child in Pennsylvania with the foundational literacy skills necessary for success in school and beyond.
Our Approach
We combine advocacy, education, and collaboration to drive literacy progress across Pennsylvania. We are committed to raising awareness about the urgent literacy crisis in our state, engaging communities, and mobilizing advocates to take action. Through strategic outreach and advocacy, we work closely with policymakers to champion evidence-based policies and secure the funding necessary for effective literacy instruction. By educating leaders from all sectors—including educators, community members, and legislators—on the science of reading, we can ensure that every child receives high-quality literacy education. Through fostering partnerships and uniting communities statewide, we aim to create a powerful movement for lasting change in PA’s literacy outcomes.
