What it feels like
Struggling to read isn't just an academic problem — it's an emotional one. Kids who can't keep up learn to hide, disengage, and doubt themselves. The shame of falling behind follows them well beyond the classroom.

Here's the thing
We've been teaching reading wrong.
For decades, schools taught kids to guess words from pictures instead of sounding them out. "Balanced Literacy." Looked good on paper. Didn't work.
The fix already exists.
The Science of Reading is proven, research-backed, and ready. Reading starts in the ear — sounds first, code second, meaning follows. We just need the will to teach it everywhere.
Proof it works

Rank improvement (49th → 9th)
They committed to evidence-based instruction statewide. Scores soared. Every state can do this.
When kids read, PA succeeds.
The Pennsylvania Literacy Coalition is fighting for the policies and funding that put the Science of Reading in every classroom.
